Federal officers found $220,000 worth of cocaine and methamphetamine hidden in a Volkswagen van Oct. 12, 2016 during an inspection at a Nogales border crossing, authorities said.

A Phoenix man was arrested Wednesday in an attempt to smuggle $220,000 worth of drugs at a Nogales border crossing, authorities said.

The 63-year-old man was taken into custody when U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found nearly 12 pounds of cocaine and more than 28 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in his Volkswagen van, according to a news release.

The drugs were found during a secondary inspection at the Dennis DeConcini crossing after a drug-sniffing dog alerted officers.

Officers seized the drugs and vehicle, and turned the man over to federal authorities.
