Thousands of refugees from the Mormon colonies of Chihuahua and Sonora left their homes in Mexico and came to the United States to leave the Mexican revolution behind.

The Mormon mothers and their children were given refuge in an abandoned lumberyard in El Paso, Texas. The structure had a roof, but no walls, and the families were on reluctant display to townspeople who were curious about polygamists from Mexico. Photo provided by: El Paso Public Library
