The parents of an 8-year-old boy who died at a Tucson hospital in 2022 were indicted this week on suspicion of murder and child abuse in his death, authorities say.
The unidentified boy died at a hospital here in August 2022. Deputies "noted suspicious circumstances," launching an investigation that lasted for months, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said Thursday in a news release.
Over the past several months, "numerous interviews were conducted, search warrants were executed, and medical records scrutinized" the release said.
The investigation eventually determined the boy died of blunt force trauma, the release said.
In May, the boy's parents — Joshua Butcher, 32, and Mercedes Caho, 29 — were indicted on charges of first-degree murder, and four counts of felony child abuse, the release said.
The investigation continues.
In a similar arrest in a separate case earlier this week, a Tucson mother and her boyfriend were arrested on suspicion of child abuse and murder after investigators determined the death of her 11-year-old son in November was the result of neglect, authorities say.
