A Tucson man was convicted this week in the killing and dismembering his 17-year-old cousin in 2020, authorities say.
Gerardo Barraza-Salinas faces sentencing June 24 in the first-degree murder, kidnapping and the abandoning or concealing the body of Sofia Hurtado. She was staying with Barraza-Salinas, his girlfriend and their two children during a visit from Mexico, the Star has previously reported.
"Justice has finally been achieved for Sofia Hurtado and her loved ones," the Pima County Attorney's Office said Tuesday in a news release.
Barraza-Salinas reported Hurtado missing from his home on Tucson's east side, but investigators quickly found evidence of a violent crime inside the residence, the Star previously reported.
Police eventually linked Barraza-Salinas to several burial sites that contained Hurtado's remains.
