A man in custody attacked a Pima County corrections officer as he was being discharged this weekend from a Tucson hospital, authorities say.

Later, on his way to jail, Ehsan Karam, 43, kicked out a sheriff's department vehicle’s rear window and tried to escape while in restraints. Karam was immediately apprehended, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said Monday in a news release.

The incident started about 5 p.m. Saturday as Karam was being discharged from the hospital where he'd been taken for possible drug ingestion. He attacked a corrections officer as he left the restroom. He was tackled by the officer, nearby firefighters and hospital staff, the release said.

Minutes later, as Karam was being taken to jail, he broke a window of the transport vehicle, which came to a stop along Interstate 10 and West Silverlake Road. While the vehicle was stopped, Karam tried to run away while still restrained, the release said.

He was quickly apprehended and booked.

Nether Karam nor deputies were injured. Karam was initially booked on a fugitive warrant from Florida for assault with a deadly weapon. He now faces charges her of multiple counts of aggravated assault on an officer, escape and criminal damage.
