Two pedestrians were killed in unrelated hit-and-run crashes Friday night in midtown, Tucson police say.
About 7:15 p.m., Dennis Tsosie, 35, was found severely injured in the street in the 2100 block of North Country Club Road, south of East Grant Road. He died at the hospital, Tucson police said in a news release.
The driver fled after the crash. However, "damaged vehicle parts were found in the roadway belonging to what is believed to be a Nissan," the release said.
Tsosie was struck in the northbound lanes of traffic, though his exact position had not yet been determined, the release said.
In an unrelated crash about the same time Friday night, an unidentified pedestrian was struck and killed while crossing North Alvernon Way near East Pima Street, police said in a separate news release.
About 7:15 p.m., the person was crossing in the 1700 block of North Alvernon Way and was struck by what is believed to be a dark blue 2011-14 Hyundai Sonata traveling northbound, the release said.
The driver of the Hyundai fled.
The pedestrian was then struck by a second northbound vehicle, the release said.
"The driver of that vehicle remained on scene and was cooperative with the investigation," the release said. "The pedestrianβs fatal injuries were not believed to be caused by the second vehicle."
The name of the pedestrian in the Alvernon crash is being withheld pending family notification, the release said.
In both crashes, detectives are checking the area for video surveillance that might have captured the collision or vehicles in the area prior to and after the crashes.
There have been six pedestrians killed in Tucson crashes so far this year, police say.
