A man suspected of shooting a woman in Tucson's midtown was found dead Tuesday night of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Officers found the man inside a shed in the 2600 block of North Edith Boulevard shortly after 10 p.m., said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

About 5:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting on Edith and found a woman who was shot.

The woman was taken to a hospital and remains in stable condition, said Bay.

The neighborhood is north of East Grant and east of North Country Club roads.

Police negotiators were talking to the shooter who was believed to be inside the house, Bay said. The Special Weapons and Tactics team were also called to the scene.

Nearby residences were evacuated for safety measures, said Bay.

Investigators were expected to remain at the scene into Wednesday morning.

No further information was immediately available.
