James A. Olson

A 25-year-old man was arrested Sunday, in connection with multiple felony charges related to an hours-long standoff with police on Tucson's north side Saturday.

James A. Olson is being held without bond at the Pima County Detention Center, according to the jail's online database.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m. Saturday, police officers arrived at the scene of a domestic violence call at an apartment in the area of North 1st Avenue and East Pastime Drive, according to a Tucson Police Department news release.

Before they arrived, officers were told that a man and woman were fighting, and he had access to knives and a BB gun, which he had already fired. Police also learned that the man had an outstanding felony arrest warrant for a drug offense, the release said.

They found the woman uninjured in the parking lot, and attempted to talk to the man, who was standing outside of the apartment, but he went inside and refused to come out. While still inside the apartment, the man started a fire and police were forced to evacuate neighboring apartments and close part of North 1st Avenue to traffic, the release said.

Tucson fire crews arrived and successfully extinguished the fire before it spread.

Hostage negotiators spoke to the man for several hours, but he still refused to leave the apartment, and even attempted to start another fire, the release said.

At about 1:15 p.m., police were able to enter the apartment and took the man into custody. He was transported to Banner-University Medical Center for evaluation and released from the hospital the next day, at which point he was arrested.

Olson was booked into jail on two counts of arson of an occupied structure, two counts of aggravated assault, prohibited possession, and an outstanding felony warrant for failure to appear on a drug sale charge. It's unclear from court records if Olson has an attorney.
