8 Tucson students get $2,500 scholarships
Eight Tucson students have been named National Merit $2,500 scholarship winners.
The students were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program. They are:
Alian P. Godoy and Jules T. Wyman of University High School, Jack Z. Liu and Meena Venkataramanan of Catalina Foothills High School, Caroline S. O’Neill of Tucson High Magnet School, Cameron Q. Williams of Basis Tucson North, Elaine F. Wright of The Gregory School and Jennifer C. Xiao of Basis Oro Valley.
National Merit $2,500 scholarship winners have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
2 Tucson teens to perform on Broadway
Two Tucson students are headed to Broadway in New York City to perform.
Sophia Rose Franklin of Ironwood Ridge and Luke Gaff of Desert Christian high schools were among more than two dozen Southern Arizona high school students who performed musical theater for a chance to go to New York.
The students performed at the Fox Theater on May 7, and Franklin and Gaff were chosen as the best actors as part of the Ben Vereen Awards, which is produced by Arts Express, Broadway in Tucson, University of Arizona School of Dance, Theater, Film and Television and the Arizona Theatre Company.
Franklin and Gaff will perform at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway on June 26.
Flowing Wells schools serving free lunches
The Flowing Wells School District will provide free breakfast and lunch to children who are 18 years old or younger during summer break.
The program was made possible through a sponsorship from the Summer Food Service Program for Children.
Food will be available at the following times and locations:
- Richardson Elementary School, 6901 N. Camino de la Tierra, from May 30 to July 31;
- Laguna Elementary, 5001 N. Shannon Road, from May 30 to June 30;
- Homer Davis Elementary, 4250 N. Romero Road, from May 30 to June 30;
- Hendricks Elementary, 3400 W. Orange Grove Road, from May 30 to June 30;
- Flowing Wells High School, 3725 N. Flowing Wells Road, from June 5 to July 13; and
- Flowing Wells Junior High, 4545 N. La Cholla Blvd., from May 30 to June 29.
Breakfast at all locations will be served from 7:30 to 8 a.m., with the exception of the Flowing Wells High location, which will serve breakfast between 7 and 8:15 a.m., and Flowing Wells Junior High, which will be from 7:30 to 8:10 a.m.
Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to noon at all locations, except at Flowing Wells High, where it will be served between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Flowing Wells Junior High, where lunch is from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

5 UHS students earn $1,000 scholarships
Five University High School students were awarded $1,000 each in scholarships.
Those students are Andy Li, Stanley Wong, Daiva Scovil, Anthony Lumm and Gabriel Olmos.
The awards, from the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Greater Tucson, are based on academic excellence, financial need and community involvement.
