TUSD’s solar power efforts honored by the EPA
The Tucson Unified School District was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as the 2015 Green Power Partner of the Year.
The EPA honored 25 businesses and organizations for advancing the nation’s renewable energy market.
TUSD’s installation of one of the largest solar generation projects at a K-12 school system in the United States produces nearly 20 million kilowatt-hours of green power a year, representing about 20 percent of the district’s annual electricity use.
The solar arrays were placed at 43 sites across TUSD.
Tucson High is holding open house for 8th-graders
Tucson High Magnet School is hosting an open house Wednesday for local eighth-graders and their families.
Families will have the chance to tour the campus, 400 N. Second Ave., view student work and performances, and speak with faculty and staff.
Information on open enrollment and the magnet application process will also be available.
The school will be open from 5:30 to 8 p.m., with the introduction and welcome scheduled for 6 p.m.

Marana High student gets named video game fellow
A Marana High School student was selected to be a video game innovation fellow.
The Hispanic Heritage Foundation and the Entertainment Software Association chose Naomi Hareid as one of 20 minority youth fellows.
The fellows were selected based on apps and video games they developed.
Hareid and the other fellows flew to Washington D.C. to present their ideas to the White House and the U.S. Congress on Oct. 22.
Elks Lodge No. 2532 awards grant for homeless students
Youth On Their Own was awarded a $1,000 grant from the Tucson East Elks Lodge No. 2532.
The organization supports the high school graduation and continued success of homeless students by providing financial assistance, basic human needs and guidance.
8 with Sunnyside ties to be inducted into district’s HOF
Eight community members will be inducted into the Sunnyside Unified School District Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame.
They are: Evelyn Craft, a retired music instructor; Buck Crouch, the district’s governing board member and Sunnyside High School alumnus; Debbie Edwards, special education teacher; Robert “Bobby” Jaramillo, a JROTC instructor, former board member and Sunnyside High School alumnus; Frank Morales, the district’s security director; Harry Parks, head custodian at Ocotillo Early Learning Center and special Olympics coach of 45 years; and Mary Jane Santos, retired principal of Elvira Elementary School.
A ceremony will be held at Gallego Intermediate Fine Arts School, 3700 E. Alvord Road, on Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person. For more information, call 256-9300.
2 Tucson-area educators honored for their out-of-school work
Two Tucson-area educators were honored as part of the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence’s Out-of-School Time Awards.
Linda Kubiak, director of community services in the Vail School District, received the 2015 Jane Romatzke Leadership Award for her work for more than 20 years.
Pima County JTED’s Danette Davis, a program coordinator and lead teacher, was named 2015 Professional of the Year.
The Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence works to improve access to high-quality out-of-school learning opportunities for Arizona children and youth through professional development, advocacy and community capacity building.
La Paloma hosting its annual Harvest Fest events at 3 campuses
La Paloma Academy is hosting its annual Harvest Fest on Friday at all three of its campuses.
The alternative-to-Halloween event, which is open to the public, will offer entertainment while celebrating the arrival of the season.
Activities and offerings vary by site.
The Central Campus festivities will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 2050 N. Wilmot Road.
The celebration at Lakeside Campus, 8140 E. Golf Links Road, is from 6 to 8 p.m.
The festival at South Campus, 5660 S. 12th Ave., is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
