The University of Arizona is hosting an event on April 14Β to expose high school and college undergraduate students to science, technology, engineering, arts and math fields.
βWe know that there is a need for more people to be pursuing jobs and careers in the STEM field,β said Kelly South, a UA spokeswoman.
Science, technology, engineering and math is commonly referred to as STEM. The UA chose to include the βA,β which stands for arts, and is calling its event βSTEAMworks,β because there are a lot of technologies that are used in the arts, she said.
βItβs become a trend,β she said. βWeβre noticing a lot more around the country.β
There will be more than 50 exhibitors and booths, including graphics software company Adobe, Cisco, Raytheon and Microsoft. Several UA departments and clubs will also participate.
Exhibits include medical simulation technology, the science of baseball, virtual reality journalism, a low-cost mosquito surveillance trap and a look at Martian history through machine learning.
STEAMworks will be held at the UAβs Student Union Grand Ballroom. Exhibits are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be free and open to the campus community and public.
More than 800 students from local high schools are expected to attend, South said.
βWeβre looking at high school because we know that they would be that next generation that could come to the university,β she said.
