Math and science academy named charter school of year
A Tucson charter school was named Charter School of the Year.
Academy of Math and Science-Prince, which serves about 420 students, received top honors from the Arizona Charter Schools Association.
The school focuses on science, technology, engineering and math. It provides a well-rounded college-preparatory education, the association said.
Flowing Wells teacher 1 of 4 recognized as standout
A Flowing Wells Junior High School teacher was recognized as an outstanding Latino teacher.
José “Chach” Snook is one of four Arizona teachers chosen by Chicanos Por La Causa to receive the 2016 Esperanza Latino Teacher Award.
The four teachers were chosen based on their ability to inspire students of all backgrounds, active involvement in their schools and commitment to their communities.
Vail teacher selected as excellence ambassador
A Vail teacher was selected as an Ambassador of Excellence by the Arizona Educational Foundation.
Christine DeBono, a math teacher at Cottonwood Elementary School, is one of five Arizona teachers selected for the program. One of the five will be named the Teacher of the Year.
DeBono and the others will be honored at a luncheon Nov. 17 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.
Tucson student awarded gold congressional medal
A Tucson student won a congressional award.
Piyaporn Chivatanaporn of Sonoran Science Academy-Tucson received a gold medal for her excellence in volunteer public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration.
Chivatanaporn spent three years doing 400 hours of public service, 200 hours of personal development, 200 hours of physical fitness activities and five days planning and executing a personal expedition.
She will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in June 2017.
New Amphi school named Innovation Academy
The new science, technology, engineering and math elementary school in the Amphitheater School District now has a name.
The K-5 school, which will open for classes in August 2017, will be called Innovation Academy. It was chosen out of more than 200 names submitted by the community.
The school is being built in Oro Valley at 825 W. Desert Fairway Drive, near North La Cañada Drive and West Moore Road.
Marana student named National Hispanic Scholar
A Marana High School student was named a National Hispanic Scholar.
Kimberly York, who has maintained a 4.0-GPA throughout high school, was awarded a $72,000 National Merit Hispanic Scholarship from the University of Arizona.
College Board selects National Hispanic Scholars based on academic excellence.
State education department seeks public feedback
The state education department wants the public’s feedback on existing science and social studies standards.
The science standards were adopted in 2004 and social studies, 2005. The department launched a public survey to seek input. It will be open until Dec. 3.
Educators can apply to serve on the revision committees for each of the content areas.
