The Sabino High School Hall of Fame has inducted neuroscientist Jeremy Richman, saying he helped to change how the medical and neuroscience communities look at the human brain and emotional wellness.

Richman

Richman graduated from Sabino High School in 1988. He earned his bachelor’s degrees in molecular and cellular biology and a doctorate degree in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Arizona and his post-doctorial education from Vanderbilt University.

His 6-year-old daughter, Avielle, was one of the 26 children and educators killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. Afterward, Richman and his wife, Jennifer Hensel, founded the nonprofit Avielle Foundation, whose goal is to prevent violence through brain health research and fostering of community.

Richman, who died in 2019, received numerous awards for his research and the Avielle Foundation’s efforts. He was a faculty lecturer for the psychiatry department at Yale University’s School of Medicine and served as an advisor to many national and international organizations that study brain health, human violence patterns and peace.

The Hall of Fame induction took place Friday, Oct. 6, at Sabino High, 5000 N. Bowes Road, in Tucson Unified School District.
