Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse is coordinating several efforts in October to inform residents about issues of domestic violence, services available to those experiencing domestic violence and what the community can do to help.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In 2016 in Arizona, 100 people died from domestic violence-related incidents, including 16 in Pima County, Emerge! said in a news release.
Emerge! will hold two donation drives to collect supplies for survivors of domestic abuse.
With the help of Two Men and a Truck moving company, Emerge! will hold a “Stuff the Truck” event to collect supplies.
The first event is Oct. 13 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Canyon del Oro Baptist Church, 9200 N. Oracle Road in Oro Valley. The second event is Oct. 27 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Rincon Congregational Church, 122 N. Craycroft Road.
In many cases when victims arrive at a shelter they lack basic provisions such as hygiene items, pillows and undergarments. For a list of needed items by Emerge! go to www.emergecenter.org
The center is also asking residents to wear purple on Oct. 19, which is Wear Purple Day for awareness of domestic violence. People can wear purple and take a picture and share on social media with the #Emerge tag.
