Rep. Raúl Grijalva

In a process determined by Arizona law, Gov. Katie Hobbs has set the dates for a primary election and a general election to fill the congressional seat that was held by Raúl Grijalva, who died Thursday

The primary election in Arizona's Congressional District 7 will be July 15 and the general election will be Sept. 23, Hobbs announced late Friday afternoon.

Grijalva, 77, a Congress member since 2003, died of complications from cancer treatment, his office said.

The district, anchored in part of Tucson, spans much of Southern Arizona, stretches to central Arizona, and is heavily Democratic in voter registrations.
