Talking to kids about alcohol

Parents are encouraged to talk with their children early and often on the dangers of underage drinking and riding with a drinking driver.

The Board of Supervisors has a message for 18- to 20-year-olds who decide to host parties with underage drinking at their homes: Beware.

There was already a Pima County ordinance in place that prohibited county residents from “knowingly” allowing, or failing to prevent, minors drinking on their property. However, it was limited to property owners of legal drinking age, or 21 and above.

On Tuesday, the supervisors unanimously closed the loophole by changing the ordinance to apply to anyone “18 years of age or older.” Supervisor Richard Elías said the measure was a positive step because “horrible things happen” when you mix alcohol and minors. Violation of the ordinance is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
