The American election system is something to be proud of and decisions made by the majority of voters must be respected, Sen. John McCain said in a statement Thursday.
The 2008 Republican presidential nominee issued the statement following Donald Trump's refusal during a Wednesday evening debate to say he will accept the results of next month's election if he loses to Hillary Clinton.
In Ohio Thursday Trump said he will “totally accept” the results of the presidential election “if I win,” according to the Associated Press.
In McCain's statement, he noted that while he didn't like the outcome of the 2008 election when he lost the presidential race, he had "a duty to concede.” McCain added that he did so without reluctance.
“A concession isn’t just an exercise in graciousness. It is an act of respect for the will of the American people, a respect that is every American leader’s first responsibility,” McCain said in the statement.
