Ending misconceptions about the mentally ill is a goal of local writer and editor Sheila Wilensky, who recently published a book, “A Certain Slant of Light: Emerging From the Shadows of Mental Illness.” Wilensky includes the perspectives and insights of several Tucsonans in her work.
Wilensky will hold a book signing from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Our Place Clubhouse, 66 E. Pennington St. Her book, which sells for $12.95, will be on sale after Friday at Antigone Books, 411 N. Fourth Ave.; Mostly Books, 6208 E. Speedway; and the University of Arizona Bookstore, 1209 E. University Blvd.
More than a year ago, Wilensky started a writing group at Our Place Clubhouse. Participants shared their stories, and Wilensky has collected them in a chapbook, which is a small book typically containing poems, ballads or stories.
The book’s foreword, “We’re All in This Together,” was written by Suzi Hileman, a retired social worker who was shot along with Gabrielle Giffords on Jan. 8, 2011.
Suggestions for action and ideas about what can be done to change attitudes about mental illness are at the back of the book.
