A Sierra Vista motorist died after driving the wrong way on a highway bypass and crashing head-on into 18-wheeler, police said.

Kenneth Wray, 74, was heading eastbound in a westbound lane on Highway 90 bypass when the crash occurred just after 12:30 p.m.Monday, the Sierra Vista Police Department said in a news release.

Westbound drivers took evasive action to avoid Wray's 2005 Ford minivan, but the driver of the semi-trailer couldn't get out of the way in time and chose to come to a stop, witnesses told police.

Wray's vehicle kept going and hit the big rig head-on, witnesses said. He was declared dead at the scene.

The crash shut down a section of the westbound bypass for more than two hours Monday afternoon.

The accident is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact SVPD Detective John Papatrefon, an accident reconstruction specialist, at (520) 452-7500.
