Tucson Tejano singer, Adalberto Gallegos and his son Adalberto Gallegos Jr. are recovering from Monday's kidney transplant surgery. Gallegos Jr. donated one his kidneys to his father who was in renal failure and has been on dialysis for nearly four years.

But further dialysis may come to an end, Gallegos senior said Wednesday morning from his hospital bed.

"One of the doctors came in and said 'Well from the looks of things you won't be needing dialysis,'" Gallegos said.

He added that his son, who is 42 years old and also a singer, is doing well. "He sounds good. He feels strong," said Gallegos, 61. The surgery lasted about six hours.

The elder Gallegos is a well-known and award winning Tejano singer. For about 40 years, on and off, he was the lead singer for Latin Breed, one of the best-known Tejano bands. Gallegos was the first non-Texan to be inducted into the Texas Roots Hall of Fame, which honors individuals in the Tejano music field.

Gallegos said he expects the doctors to release him from the hospital Friday. He didn't say when he expects his son to be allowed to return home.

Gallegos who after recovery is planning to restart his musical career which began when he first began performing with Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson, a youth mariachi performing group.

"I can't wait to get back on the stage," he said.
