The coldest temperatures of the season will grip the Tucson area for the next few days.

Tuesday's high of 56 degrees was the coldest high recorded in Tucson since Feb. 3, according to the National Weather Service.

A freeze warning is in effect Tuesday night into early Wednesday for the Tucson metro area.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 20s to lower 30s overnight.

Another freeze warning will be in place Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Sensitive outdoor plants should be protected from the cold or moved indoors. Exposed outdoor pipes should also be protected from the frigid temperatures.

The city of Tucson said it will begin on Tuesday spraying magnesium chloride on city bridge decks. The substance lowers the freezing temperatures of water and prevents ice from bonding on the road.

When temperatures warrant, the city will spray 58 bridge decks and monitor them until the early morning to make sure ice does not form on the road.

Motorists should be ware of crews working around the bridge decks crossing and drive with caution.

The National Weather Service has also issued a hard freeze warning for the next two overnights for areas south of Tucson, including Altar Valley, Santa Cruz River valley and the city of Nogales. Temperatures are expected to drop to the lower to mid-20s the next two nights in those areas.
