NBC’s Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, has been missing since the evening of Jan. 31. She was last seen at her home near Tucson, Arizona, and was reported missing the following day by a family member after failing to appear for Sunday plans.
At a news conference Monday, Feb. 2, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie's disappearance was being investigated as a crime. Guthrie could not have walked out on her own, according to the department.
Authorities found “concerning” evidence near where she was last seen, leading them to treat her home as a crime scene and involve homicide detectives in the investigation.

Savannah Guthrie issued a brief statement on behalf of her family on the "Today" show on Feb. 2 saying: "We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff's Department." The number to call is 520-351-4900.
Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Angelica Carillo said in an emailed news release in the evening of Feb. 2: "Our department has established a Tip Line QR code to streamline the sharing of information. Nancy Guthrie, who has appeared on the "Today" show several times over the years, is a single mom to Savannah Guthrie and her sister. Their father died of a heart attack when Savannah Guthrie was sixteen years old.
"She has met unthinkable challenges in her life with grit, without self-pity, with determination, and always, always with unshakeable faith," Savannah Guthrie said in a tribute on her mother's 80th birthday in 2022.
Savannah Guthrie thanked supporters in a statement.
"On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support," she said. "Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie was abducted or kidnapped, as she could not have walked out of the home on her own.
"At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night. Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction," Nanos said.
That revelation on Feb. 2 came hours after Nanos first told reporters that Nancy Guthrie's disappearance was being investigated as a crime, as homicide detectives were called in to process the scene at her house.
Nanos and other department officials, however, declined to elaborate on why the incident would be explored as a crime, other than to explain that there were "some suspicious circumstances.” At the time, they acknowledged that they could not immediately rule out foul play.
Authorities have been searching the Catalina Foothills area, using ground crews and dog teams, as well as drones and aircraft.
Nancy Guthrie’s neighbors have been asked to check their home surveillance cameras and to call the Pima County Sheriff's Department with anything they might have seen.
