Re: the Dec. 19 article "Arizona bill would make theft of Ameican flag a mandatory felony"
I’ve read that stealing an American flag could be elevated to a felony. Let me count the reasons I am so pleased:
1. Deterence factor: Surely the swarms of flag stealers will be deterred.
2. Symbolism factor: Too often the importance of symbols is forgotten.
3. Employment: We will probably need prison guards to handle the huge influx of inmates.
4. Literacy: The throngs arrested for this offense will be sorry that they did not read the newspaper so they could have known that their offense was now a felony.
5. Recognition: Many of us tend forget that our legislators work so hard. We think that because they hardly ever are in session that they are hard at work, solving problems and passing only necessary legislation.
Thank you, lawmakers, for your ability to separate the important from less important. You are often accused of posturing rather than doing the important.
