Re: the June 22 guest opinion "Why I'm suing Arizona to help low-wage workers."

Congratulations to Tucson City Council member Regina Romero and her colleagues from other cities who are suing the state over the pre-emption law that forbids Tucson from passing earned sick leave.

The arrogance and hypocrisy of our state Legislature and Governor are mind boggling. On the one hand they argue vociferously for state's rights when the federal government passes laws they don't like, while presuming to know what is best for cities like Tucson when our local leaders advocate for a kinder, common sense path.

The majority of Americans, and a very high percentage of Tucsonans, believe that all workers should be able to earn paid time off to care for themselves or sick family members. Why should 163 other countries have this common-sense benefit and not Americans? And if our state leaders won't act in our best interests, then it is up to us to act locally.
