Re: the July 22 article, "Award to Melvin usually given posthumously"

I sponsored the legislation creating this medal, SB1313, and Gov. Jan Brewer signed it into law. While serving in the AZ Senate, I helped to design this medal. State Sen. Steve Smith gave one of these medals to me as a token of my role in making it happen. This took place at the SaddleBrooke Republican Club meeting on July 20.

Since 1912, over 3,000 Arizona citizens have been killed in action while serving in the US Armed Forces. This medal honors them and their ultimate sacrifice.
