Blocked streets have been part and parcel of social justice movements throughout U.S. history, including labor struggles which brought the eight-hour workday and civil rights which desegregated public transportation, schools and restaurants. Property destruction seems unacceptable to the mainstream mind until one considers the Boston Tea Party and its place in the American Revolutionary movement.
When the measures of discourse, education and persuasion have failed, our forebears created a tension which in turn birthed social evolution. In the rear view mirror of history what was once vilified and criminalized is now celebrated. This is what democracy looks like.
