COOLIDGE — The U.S. Marine Corps has suspended all double-bag static line parachuting operations until further notice after the death of a corporal earlier this week in Arizona.
Marine Corps officials say 22-year-old Alejandro "Alex" Romero of Carson, California was taking part in a multi-mission parachute course exercise Monday over Coolidge when he died.
Coolidge is located about 45 miles southeast of Phoenix.
Phoenix TV station KTVK reports that witnesses called 911 after seeing someone fall from the sky tangled in a parachute.
CPR was performed on the skydiver until paramedics arrived and took the injured person to a hospital, where he died.
Marine Corps officials say a preliminary investigation is underway and all double-bag static line parachuting operations have been suspended effective immediately until further notice.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page for the burial costs.
