As Tucson residents prepare to vote on Propositions 418 and 419, it's important to understand what's really at stake: the continuation of voter-approved, locally controlled funding that will keep our roads repaired, our infrastructure maintained, and our transportation system moving forward for the next 20 years. Anyone who drives on Pima County roads knows we need continued investment in resurfacing and maintenance to keep our streets safe and working well.

As a midtown resident, I've heard many neighbors comment on the newly improved residential streets, but the need for repaved major roads remains immense. The strength of our streets and infrastructure should be a point of pride rather than scorn. That is why I am voting "Yes" on both Propositions 418 & 419, and encourage you to do the same.

Why local control matters

In an era of uncertain state and federal transportation funding, Props 418 & 419 guarantee that Pima County residents will determine our transportation priorities through voter-protected funding. For those who think that federal, state, or local government have money sitting around that can be shifted to fund the massive investment needed for infrastructure improvements, they are mistaken. The continuation of this funding represents the best type of self-governance, where local residents and visitors alike contribute to a local transportation system.

Importantly, these funds can only be used for projects specifically outlined in the plan. This dedicated funding ensures we maintain control over the transportation improvements that directly affect our daily commutes and quality of life. Community input and local government collaboration have shaped these plans, making them responsive to the real needs of people who live, work, and travel throughout our region. This local control isn't just about independence; it's about efficiency. A regional approach allows better planning and coordination across Pima County's cities and towns, getting more value from every dollar invested.

Investing in safety and better roads

The continuation of this funding will support important improvements that benefit everyone who uses our roads. Potholes, cracked pavement, and deteriorating road surfaces aren't just annoying; they're safety hazards that damage vehicles and create dangerous driving conditions. These propositions provide resources for ongoing road resurfacing, pavement repairs, and intersection upgrades throughout the county.

Whether you drive to work, cycle to the store, take the streetcar, or walk your neighborhood, these propositions invest in infrastructure you use every day. Safer intersections, smoother pavement, and improved facilities all help reduce congestion while protecting our families, first responders, and neighbors.

Not adding new taxes

Perhaps most importantly, Props 418 & 419 do not raise taxes. These measures continue the existing voter-approved sales tax that Pima County residents already approved 20 years ago for regional transportation improvements. This is about renewing our commitment to infrastructure maintenance and improvements without adding any new costs for families or businesses.

Economic benefits for our community

Props 418 & 419 will secure around $2.67 billion in transportation investment over two decades. This steady funding creates thousands of good-paying jobs in construction and related industries while making Pima County more attractive to businesses. Quality infrastructure draws investment from retailers, restaurants, and employers of all kinds, strengthening our economy and making our community a better place to live.

Vote yes for our future

Propositions 418 & 419 represent a proven approach to transportation funding that keeps control in local hands while maintaining the infrastructure our community depends on.

It's critical to understand that both propositions must pass for this funding to continue. Props 418 and 419 work together as a package, and voting yes on only one won't allow these improvements to move forward.

I encourage every Pima County voter to support Props 418 & 419 this election. Our transportation future, and our community's prosperity, depends on it.
