A downtown Tucson school was destroyed when a fire broke out early Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., passers-by reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the area where the Downtown Community School is located at 614 S. Meyer Ave.

The fire started in the attic due to an electrical wiring malfunction. It took 20 minutes to get the blaze under control, the fire department reported.

“We’re in total shock, absolutely devastated,” said Emily McCrea, the school’s founder. “It’s very upsetting for everyone involved and our families. We’re so grateful for the outpouring of support and we’re very happy nobody was hurt.”

Here’s what you need to know about the school that opened in 2012 in the historic Barrio Viejo community:

Downtown Community School, 614 S. Meyer Ave.

Who goes there?

The tuition-based school can serve up to two dozen preschoolers and kindergartners. DCS is also home to a bunny and chicken who were unharmed.

What will happen to the school?

The summer session, which was already underway, is canceled. It is unlikely that the new school year will kick off on Aug. 8 as planned, McCrea said.

DCS is working to refer its families to other schools while it works to restore the building.

How you can help:

Supporters of Downtown Community School have also inquired about helping with cleanup efforts but the building is condemned and cannot be occupied.
