Several schools had a large percentage of employees say they would not be at work Thursday, said Gabriel Trujillo, TUSD's superintendent in a press conference Tuesday morning.

It is still unknown whether TUSD schools will be open Friday.Β

But Trujillo said it is likely the district will be closed through the rest of this week, since 1,300 people have called in for Friday, so far.Β

Food services will be available at the schools for children that rely on school breakfast and lunches. But, parents will need to accompany their children for meals.Β

Sunnyside Unified will also close Thursday and Friday.Β

Food services will be available to Sunnyside children at all Sunnyside schools for breakfast and lunch. Parents must accompany their children to the cafeteria. Breakfast is at 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch is at 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.Β

Teachers and support staff will remain on the job through Wednesday, said Noah Karvelis, who helped found Arizona Educators United, one of the groups behind the #RedForEd movement.Β

Closures also affect before-care and after-care, so parents should start planning for that.Β

There has been internal discussion to expand the city's KidCo extended care program during the teacher strike, but it is unclear whether that is feasible.Β
