Jordan Geist, Arizona’s freshman shot put phenom, set a UA school record Saturday and established the second-best mark in the world with a heave of 70 feet 4 inches.
Geist, 19, is one of the youngest athletes ever to surpass 70 feet in the shot put. He also set an NCAA freshman record and a Dempsey Indoor facility standard at the University of Washington Invitational meet.
“Today was a fantastic day,” UA throws coach TJ Crater said in a news release. “Jordan has been on a mission for the past few weeks, and he accomplished his goal. He executed his throw very well, and brought the right level of emotion to the meet. I could not be prouder of him. Now, we go back to refocus on the big meets ahead.”
UA's Carlos Villarreal ran a sub-4-minute mile, winning his heat with a time of 3:59.65. He finished fourth overall. Justice Summerset cleared 7-0½ to take third in the high jump. Collins Kibet finished 4th at 800 meters in 1:51.64.
In the women’s competition, the UA’s Claire Green finished fourth in the 3,000 meters in 9:14.37, and Megan Dulaney placed fifth in the shot put (48-4¾). On Friday, Alyssa Thompson tied for first place in the indoor pentathlon with a score of 3,884 points.
