Thereβs a story behind the name of every racehorse, and one in particular involved Lute Olson, Jerry Tarkanian and a last-minute switcheroo by a college basketball recruit.Β
Enter, champion racehorse Midnight Lute.Β
In an interview with Pac-12 Networks on Monday, trainer and Arizona Wildcats alum Bob Baffert recalled naming one of his horses after the legendary UA basketball head coach.Β
The infamous 1986 story goes that Tarkanian, who was the head coach at UNLV at the time, and Olson were in an intense recruiting battle for Tom Tolbert. As his final decision neared, it appeared that Tolbert was set to play for the Runninβ Rebels in Las Vegas. But Olson β as he usually did β worked his magic and got Tolbert to commit to Arizona at the last minute.
Thereβs been different iterations of what went down, including Olsonβs version where he said he didnβt consider Tolbertβs commitment to UNLV to be βserious.β Still, it was enough for Tarkanian to coin the moniker βMidnight Luteβ for Olsonβs crafty maneuvers.Β
Lute Olson, Sean Elliott and the 1988 Final Four Wildcats team were dominant. In the regular season, the UA took down No. 9 Michigan, No. 1 Syracuse, No. 4 Iowa and No. 9 Duke.
The tale struck Baffert to the point where he decided to use the nickname for his own race horse.
βItβs a great story, right?βΒ Baffert said. βIt turned out to be a great racehorse.β
Midnight Lute was a champion in his own right. The racehorse went on to win four major races, including back-to-back Breederβs Cup victories in 2007 and 2008.
And of course, Olson was one of the horseβs biggest fans.
βLute, he loved it,β Baffert said. βHe came out and watched him run at Del Mar [Fairgrounds].β
Lee Corso dons the Wilbur the Wildcat head, picking the UA over UCLA, while UA alum and Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert, left, approves during a broadcast of ESPN's "College GameDay" from the University of Arizona, Sept. 26, 2015.
Baffertβs horses have won a total of five Kentucky Derbyβs and the two most recent Triple Crowns: American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018. Baffert, aΒ 1977 graduate of UAβs Race Track Industry Program, has been a long-time admirer of Olsonβs accomplishments and legacy at Arizona.
βGreat person, but what a great coach,β Baffert said βHe made Arizona basketball.β
