In a game of runs, Utah’s dominant second quarter was too much for Arizona women’s basketball’s furious fourth-quarter rally.
Utah (10-3, 1-0) beat the Wildcats 63-62 on Monday afternoon in the four-corner rivals’ first Big 12 games of the season.
Arizona had the ball with 8.5 seconds and down by one after outscoring Utah 19-10 in the fourth period.
The Wildcats then had the ball with 1.6 seconds left after a jump ball. Arizona junior center Achol Magot's last-second shot came up short.
Arizona (9-3, 0-1 Big 12) boosted a 9-0 run as well as some 7-0 runs and there were eight lead changes, but Utah’s second quarter included a 17-0 run. Arizona has lost three straight to Utah.
In the fourth quarter, Arizona got to within one point with 9.7 seconds left after a 6-0 run and holding the Utes scoreless for about five minutes, but Utah’s second-quarter cushion proved to be too much.
Utah opened the second quarter on a 17-0 run to go ahead 32-19. Arizona didn’t score in the second until junior guard Sumayah Sugapong hit a jumper with 3:18 left in the half.

Arizona then went scoreless for about two minutes and 45 seconds before graduate student guard Mickayla Perdue got a layup just before the half ended. Utah led 39-23 at the break after outscoring the Wildcats 24-4 in the second period.
Five Wildcats scored at least eight points lead by Perdue with 16, freshman forward Daniah Trammell had 12, graduate student guard Noelani Cornfield had 11, junior guard Tanyuel Welch had 11 and fifth-year forward Nora Francois scored 8.
Arizona opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run, which included a three-pointer by Welch.
Midway through the quarter, Arizona held Utah to one field goal on its last 13 shots and 0 for 5 from the field at one point. After the Wildcats held the Utes to one for their last eight field goals and went on a 6-0 run, they cut the lead to six with 1:32 left in the quarter.
Utah responded with its own 6-0 run to lead by 10 after three quarters.
Utah senior guard Lani White led all scorers with 26 points.
In the first quarter, Utah jumped ahead 13-9 after a three-pointer by White, but Arizona quickly narrowed that advantage to one point.
Cornfield tied it up at 15-15 with a three-pointer of her own and then Arizona took the lead when Welch made a jump shot off a Utah turnover.
The Wildcats closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run and held the Utes to a scoring drought of 3:38. Arizona led 19-15 after the first frame.
The Wildcats head to Colorado for their first road game of the season on Dec. 31.
