The Arizona Wildcats dismissed running back Orlando Bradford from the team Wednesday after he was arrested and charged with seven felony counts of domestic violence.
Bradford, 20, was charged with four counts of aggravated assault and three counts of kidnapping, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman. The duplicate charges stem from multiple crimes committed over several days, Dugan said.
Bradford practiced with the Wildcats on Wednesday morning. The victim contacted TPD around that time, and officers investigated. Bradford was arrested later in the day, Dugan said, and booked into Pima County Jail. He appeared in front of a judge Wednesday night and bond was set at $20,000.
The UA released a statement on behalf of Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez and the athletic department on Wednesday afternoon. It read: âEarlier today, we were made aware that Orlando Bradford had been arrested. As a result of his actions, he has been dismissed from the program.â
Bradford, a sophomore from Shreveport, Louisiana, showed great promise late last season. Bradford rushed for 61 yards on 11 carries in the season-ending New Mexico Bowl. He finished the year with 47 carries for 208 yards and three touchdowns.
He was listed as a co-starter with junior Nick Wilson on this seasonâs depth chart. However, through two games, Wilson had 41 carries to Bradfordâs five.
Bradfordâs departure likely elevates freshman J.J. Taylor to the backup role behind Wilson. Taylor had an impressive training camp. He has only one carry thus far, along with two punt returns.
