Arizona football has largely focused in California for its 2017 recruiting class so far, mixed in with some Florida, Arizona and Las Vegas recruits as well.
Saturday, the Wildcats expanded their 2017 map, capped by the verbal commitment from Garden Community College linebacker Delshawn Phillips. Earlier in the day, safety Troy Young from Mobile, Alabama, announced his verbal commitment to the Wildcats as well.
Phillips is the first junior college product to commit to the Wildcats for 2017, and the 23rd commitment overall. He made the announcement while on campus for an unofficial visit. The 6-foot-1, 215 pound linebacker originally hails from Detroit, and had signed a letter of intent to play at Western Michigan in 2014 but didn't qualify academically.Β
The addition is further proof that the Wildcats, with the addition of recruiting coordinator Chris Singletary, are trying to venture out into Michigan for talent. Singletary worked in a similar role for the Wolverines previously, including during UA coachΒ Rich Rodriguez's tenure in Ann Arbor.Β
