Quick hitters from Arizona’s final training-camp practice Saturday:

* UA coach Rich Rodriguez said quarterbacks Anu Solomon and Brandon Dawkins will continue to get equal practice reps "probably throughout the season." Rodriguez is living up to his promise to not publicly name a starter until just before kickoff of the Sept. 3 opener against BYU.

* The Wildcats ran a closed-to-the-media scrimmage of about 100 plays featuring live tackling (except for the quarterbacks).

* Tailback Orlando Bradford did not participate because of what Rodriguez described as "a little bruise" He did not specify which body part was bruised. Rodriguez said Bradford would be back in 1-2 days. He spent the open portion of practice riding an elliptical machine.

* Others who did not participate in the scrimmage because of injuries included defensive lineman Calvin Allen and offensive linemen Alex Kosinski and Keenan Walker.

* Rodriguez’s assessment of the scrimmage: There was some stuff that he liked, some that he didn't. He didn't seem pleased with the team afterward and took a little time to cool off before talking to reporters.

* Some of the issues on defense: penalties and poor tackling. And on offense: dropped passes and pass-protection breakdowns by the second-team offensive line against blitzes.

* Witnesses said there was a fight near the end of the scrimmage. That wouldn’t be a surprising development this late in camp with live tackling.

* Rodriguez talked a bit about preparing for BYU. He said it’s hard to know what the Cougars will do with an entirely new coaching staff. "We’re going to try to prepare for everything, I guess,” Rodriguez said. He said the team will start implementing its Week 1 game plan Tuesday and really dive into it Wednesday.

* Former Arizona coach Dick Tomey attended practice and talked with Rodriguez afterward.

* Rodriguez said all players on the UA roster are in good academic standing. Fall-semester classes begin Monday.

* Rodriguez on redshirt freshman Nathan Eldridge, Arizona's would-be starting center: "He’s a tough guy, and he’s going to keep getting better every practice." Rodriguez said Eldridge had some high snaps toward the end of the scrimmage.

Josh Pollack was the first man up for placements and punts during the open period of practice. Edgar Gastelum went second. I’m still unsure how that situation will shake out.

* Rodriguez said some walk-ons have received scholarships, but he didn't want to make an announcement because there aren’t enough for all the deserving candidates.

* Dozens of parents and family members watched practice from the west stands at Kindall/Sancet.
