Head to head: Kanawai Noa vs. Scottie Young jr.
Updated
9 Kanawai Noa, WR, Cal
Noa is one of the better slot receivers in the Pac-12. He leads Cal in catches (5.0) and yards (53.0) per game. He had six receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown in last year’s meeting. The TD gave the Golden Bears a 38-31 lead in overtime.
19 Scottie Young Jr., LB, Arizona
Young did not play in last year’s game; he was recovering from a knee injury. He made his 2018 debut in Week 3, and he’s still shaking off the rust after missing spring and part of training camp (suspension). Last week marked his first start at “Spur.”
Head to head: Tevin Paul vs. Donovan Laie
Updated
96 Tevin Paul, DE, Cal
Generating a consistent pass rush has been an issue for Cal. The Bears are tied for 97th in the nation at 1.5 sacks per game. Paul has yet to record one, but he does have a team-high 4.5 TFLs. He will face a freshman or a banged-up senior.
78 Donovan Laie, OL, Arizona
After four solid performances to start his UA career, Laie struggled against USC. He needs to be sturdy against the powerful Paul, especially with fellow tackle Layth Friekh trying to play through a painful lower-leg injury.
When Cal has the ball...
UpdatedKevin Sumlin noted how balanced the Bears are; they have 793 passing yards and 781 rushing yards. But they have run more than they’ve thrown in every game, so stopping the run will be priority No. 1 for the UA defense. Running back Patrick Laird finally got going against Oregon (18-92-1) after a slow start. Arizona also must be wary of No. 2 quarterback Brandon McIlwain, who shares time with Chase Garbers and rushed for 123 yards versus the Ducks.
When Arizona has the ball...
UpdatedKhalil Tate had a season-high 13 rushing attempts against USC but continues to be hampered by a sore ankle. Tate had 137 of Arizona’s 345 rushing yards in last year’s meeting, and running the ball will continue to be the Wildcats’ M.O. — especially after they failed to crack triple digits last week. Cal ranks ninth in the Pac-12 in run defense (163.8 ypg). The Bears held bruising BYU to 91 yards but yielded 260 to Oregon.

California coach Justin Wilcox watches the game against Oregon during the second half in Berkeley.
Don Feria / AP PhotoCal will be motivated after losing at home last week and getting torched by Tate in a double-overtime thriller last year that came down to the final play. But Arizona has a lot at stake as well. Landing a bowl berth becomes a lot more difficult if the Wildcats fall to 2-4. Look for Arizona to re-establish its ground game, build on last week’s strong defensive finish and get back to .500.
