QUOTES
UA coach Rich Rodriguez on Arizonaβs overall performance: βI thought our guys played hard. I think they were emotionally into the game. I certainly thought we got outplayed and outcoached in the first half, and we struggled defensively the whole game. But itβs good to have a win, and teach off a win as opposed to a loss. We have a lot of teaching and learning to do in the next 2-3 days. I think our guys are conscientious enough to do that. Weβve got a really good football team coming in, so weβve got to get better in a hurry.β
Rodriguez on the QB situation: βDawkins was the starter. Khalil was the backup. We were going to play Dawkins until we felt secure, unless he was playing poorly. And he really wasnβt. He missed a few things; he was a little excited too. But he gives you a dimension in the run game β they all do. Khalil got a little banged up because he likes to try to run over people, and thatβs not a good idea when youβre a quarterback. Nonetheless, Brandon, he was one of those guys who kind of took charge in the second half with some of the quarterback runs. β¦ Weβll keep the same rotation for now and go from there.β
Dawkins on the disparity between Arizonaβs running and passing production: βIβm not really worried about it. It just depends how the team plays us. Weβre a team thatβs built on having a triple-option attack: We can throw the ball, we can run the ball with our running backs or I can run the ball. So whatever a team does, we just gotta make sure we donβt let them be right, and thatβs when our offense is most effective. If theyβre going to sit back and take away the pass game, I donβt care if I hand it off to J.J. (Taylor) and Nick (Wilson) for 600 yards. If theyβre putting up big numbers and putting points on the board, thatβs good in my book.β
WR Shun Brown on the impact of his punt-return TD: βWe want to have at least two big plays on special teams and get the momentum going. Our coaches preach to us that if you win in special teams, more than likely youβre gonna win the game. So coming out wanting to win every rep on special teams is great.β
Flannigan-Fowles on the pass defenseβs struggles: βWeβve got some cleaning up to do. Games arenβt perfect. It was the first game, so we have to be able to shake it off and come in next week and respond.β
Ellison on his breakout performance: βI think thatβs just a reflection of all of our hard work in the summer, practicing with that chip on our shoulder. It feels really good to execute the game plan.β
