Texas A&M offensive lineman Robert Congel is transferring to Arizona, the Star has confirmed.
Congel appeared in five games as a freshman in 2017 for then-Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin, who’s now the coach of the Wildcats. Congel is listed at 6-3, 315 pounds.
Congel likely would have to sit out the upcoming season, per NCAA transfer rules, although it's possible he could be granted immediate eligibility. If denied, he would have three years of eligibility starting in 2019.
The additional of Congel helps address a big long-term need for Arizona. Offensive line might be the thinnest position on the team.
The Wildcats have only 12 scholarship linemen on their projected 2018 roster, two of whom are incoming freshmen. The line is in a state of flux following the departures of starters Jacob Alsadek, Gerhard de Beer and Christian Boettcher.
Congel graduated from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, before attending Texas A&M. Before that, he played at Cherry Creek High School near Denver.
Congel’s father played football at Syracuse and his grandfather at Fordham, according to his A&M bio.
