Arizona baseball is on the board.

The Wildcats picked up their first Big 12 honor Monday when junior third baseman Mathis Meurant was named the conference’s co-Newcomer of the Week.

Meurant, a transfer from Cochise College, batted .625 (5 of 8) with seven runs scored, two home runs and five RBIs in Arizona’s weekend sweep of San Diego.

Arizona’s Mathis Meurant smacks a three-run homer in the second inning of the Wildcats’ sweep-clinching, 12-6 victory over San Diego on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025, at Hi Corbett Field.

Meurant is the first player born and raised in France to play for a power conference school. He shared the award with Kansas State pitcher Lincoln Sheffield.

Meurant and his teammates are set to face Rice on Wednesday. Left-hander Jack Berg is the scheduled starter for the Wildcats.

Arizona then faces three Top 25 teams in the Astros Foundation College Classic Friday-Sunday at Daikin Park: No. 1 Texas A&M, No. 18 Mississippi State and No. 3 Tennessee.

All games in the tournament will be streamed at Astros.com.
