Arizona could have another game impacted by thunderstorms this season.
Remnants of Tropical Storm Priscilla, which is moving north through the Pacific Ocean near Baja California, will make its way to Southern Arizona this weekend and is expected to bring 1-3 inches of rain.
The National Weather Service forecasts "showers and possibly a thunderstorm" for Saturday night. The Big 12 is monitoring the incoming storm and its possible impact on Saturday's game. As of Friday morning, the kickoff time for the Arizona-BYU game wasn't affected. MLB canceled the Arizona Fall League tripleheader at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium due to weather concerns.
Last season, the Big 12 moved up the kickoff time of the Arizona State-Oklahoma State game over three hours, although the game was delayed for two hours at halftime due to inclement weather. Earlier this season, the kickoff time for Arizona-Weber State was delayed two hours due to thunderstorms in the area — Arizona's first weather delay since 2009.
Arizona wide receiver Montana Lemonious-Craig (5) comes off the field after a Wildcat possession gets stymied in the third quarter against Utah at Arizona Stadium on Nov. 18, 2023.
Despite potentially rainy conditions on Saturday, Arizona head coach Brent Brennan said the "Wildcats are like the mailman: We gotta go to work — rain, sleet, snow, it doesn't matter. We gotta show up and get after it."
The rainy weather could impact Arizona and BYU's ability to pass the football, but UA wide receivers coach Bobby Wade said, "We don't think about the weather, honestly."
"Obviously, if it comes to a point where we know it's going to rain, we'll do some wet ball drills, things like that, for preparation," Wade added. If it rains during the Arizona-BYU game, Arizona's receivers will be emphasizing "eyes to tuck" and "doing whatever you need to do to get the ball to your body," Wade said.
Brennan said, "the biggest thing about playing in weather is not letting the weather be a factor."
"To me, it's about a mentality, it's a process and how you go in the game thinking about it," Brennan said. "Football is football. That's the beautiful thing about football, is nothing stops football. Nothing stops game day, except for lightning. It doesn't look like lightning is in the forecast, but you never know. It's an exciting time in Tucson. We're excited to play."
