Cienega’s Chris Burroughs, middle, shows off the ball after recovering a Marana fumble in the second quarter. The Bobcats won their fifth straight game and visit Nogales next week.
Kelly Presnell / Arizona Daily StarCienega held off Marana 44-28 Friday night as the Bobcats took one step closer to the 5A Southern Region title.
The Bobcats were led by two-way star Terrell Hayward who finished with five catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Hayward also added an 81-yard kick return for a touchdown and an interception.
Cienega led 30-7 heading into the fourth quarter, but Marana, led by the Bourguet brothers, Trenton, Coben and Treyson, surged back and only trailed 30-22 after scoring back-to-back helmets.
Hayward then scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and the Bobcats ran away with the victory. Cienega defensive back Chris Burroughs also had two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Cienega now has a 7-1 record on the season and is 3-0 in region play. The 5A Southern Region title could come down to the final game of the season between Ironwood Ridge and Cienega. Ironwood Ridge and Sierra Vista Buena currently have 2-1 records, but Cienega's win last week over Buena gives the Bobcats the tiebreaker.
Hayward, quarterback Luis Morales, running back Gio Owens and head coach Pat Nugent spoke to the Star following Friday night's game, here's what they had to say.
