The track and field state championship meet opens Wednesday at Mesa Community College, with a handful of championship events.
The three-day meet featuring four divisions resumes Friday and concludes Saturday with a full slate of finals.
Flowing Wells thrower Sierra Rodriguez and Tucson High 400-meter runner Tavian Ross are among several local athletes trying to repeat as state champions.
Rodriguez, who is signed with Air Force, has the No. 1 ranking the girls Division II discus, with a toss of 139 feet, 4 inches. She'll get her chance to capture her second straight gold medal in the event Wednesday afternoon.
Ross will have to wait until Saturday for a chance at winning another championship but he'll be running in the prelims Wednesday. He has best mark in the 200, the second-fastest time in the 400 and is a member of Tucson's 400 relay team.
Wednesday's field action gets underway at 1 p.m. while the first track event is scheduled for 3 p.m. Here's a look at the Southern Arizona athlete's who will be competing:
