Year after year, Pima College women’s basketball coach Todd Holthaus begins the tedious process of replacing his top players. At a two-year school like Pima, recruiting never ends.

Yet Holthaus hasn’t slipped in his 18 years at PCC. Over the last eight full seasons, Pima’s women’s hoops team has averaged 26 victories. It has been in the NJCAA Top 10 in seven of those years.

Somehow, Hotlhaus replaced three starters from last year’s 27-9 team that finished No. 7 nationally and is now ranked No. 10 with a 6-1 record. He recruits in every conceivable town, big and small. This year’s roster includes women from Cody, Wyoming; Kirtland, N.M.; and from small Arizona towns such as Window Rock, Holbrook and Page, and from Class 4A schools like Amphitheater.

Pima’s head coach Todd Holthaus gathers the Aztecs for last-second instructions before the tip-off against Scottsdale in the NJCAA Region I, Division II semifinal at Pima Community College West, March 7, 2024.

Holthaus’ key newcomer this year is 6-3 center Kiley Sours-Miller of Phoenix, who spent last year as a redshirt on the Arizona State roster. She is now averaging 19.7 points and 10.5 rebounds; both figures lead the ACCAC.

And then there’s this: In whatever free time he has, Holthaus works as an assistant athletic director at PCC.
