Salpointe Catholic senior Leo Gutierrez, who has scored more goals, 133, than anyone in Arizona high school soccer history, scored 22 goals in his first 10 games this season.

“Leo could set a record that might not be overtaken in his lifetime,” said Salpointe coach Wolfgang Weber. Gutierrez is one of four Tucsonans (all from Salpointe) to score 100 career goals: Scott Leber, 100; Vincent Bianchi, 106; and Fernando Gauna, 116.

Salpointe’s Leo Gutierrez (9) fires home a goal at the Brandon Bean Soccer Tournament at Kino Stadium in Tucson on Nov. 29, 2023.

Last summer, Gutierrez was the guest of former Sierra Vista soccer star Luis Robles, a nine-year MLS regular now working in the MLS’ developmental program. Both the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC offered Gutierrez a chance to skip his senior year at Salpointe and train at an academy near the MLS franchises in New York.

“At the conclusion of his visit, Leo decided it would be best to stay home and enjoy his last year of high school,” said Weber, whose team has won three consecutive state championships with Gutierrez. “He’s a very special young man.”
