Tex the Tiger

Tex the Tiger and the Texas Southern band.

Tex's two-step

Tex has a good time.

He dances alongside the Texas Southern band, and this Tiger’s got moves. Tex the Tiger is a part of the Texas Southern experience, an experience rooted in a talented school band.

The band is called the Ocean of Soul.

This is life for a SWAC team, probably better known for its music than it’s athletics.

And Tex the Tiger is a part of that.

“I enjoy being here, with the team, bringing him out,” said Desoun Jamel, a TSU senior, and the man behind the mask. “Any time I’m with the team, I try to cheer them on to victory.”

Jamel was bombarded by TSU fans during Thursday's halftime. They weren't the other ones: Others sporting Arizona, from Ohio State and VCU gear tracked him down.

“It’s the job,” Jamel said. “It’s fun to entertain the crowd, get our fans involved, and take pictures with the wanna-be fans.”

The best part? Dancing alongside that loud, raucous, talented band the whole time.

“Man, it’s a pleasure to dance along a great band,” Jamel said. “We always bring the soul out, so I have to bring it out myself.”
