Sixteen artists will each paint murals they've designed to represent the theme "Life in Sugar Hill" starting tomorrow.
Sugar Hill is a historic midtown Tucson neighborhood that now encompasses the El Cortez Heights, Feldmans and Northwest neighborhoods and was home to many from Tucson's African-American community.
The point of the project is "to beautify Tucson, educate and preserve history of neighborhoods, showcase local talent and create a positive sense of community," said Tanya Alvarez, a volunteer and artist with Tucson Arts Brigade.
Murals will be on the cement walls lining the Bronx Wash, which runs east-west along East Linden Street, between North Sixth and North Euclid Avenues.
Anyone of any age in the community is invited to help paint or observe and interact with the artists. Supplies and snacks will be provided.
On Saturday evening, there will be a potluck and get-together. Local artists, musicians or entertainers are welcome to join.
"We would like to create a friendly, safe atmosphere of unity and encourage friendly dialogue, education, culture, community, tolerance and, especially, creativity," Alvarez said.
