Library Story Time

Three-year-old Jackson Richardson dances while grandfather Jim Zook looks on during preschool story time with librarian Cat Strong.

If you're looking for ideas for this weekend, we've got you covered.

Here are three free things you can do with the kids.

1. Watch a puppet show

Puppets Amongus will be at the Oro Valley Public Library, which is located at 1305 W. Naranja Drive, performing "The Silken Thread." The story is about how silk was discovered when a cocoon fell into a Chinese Empress' cup of tea. The show is at 11 a.m. Saturday and it's free.

On Aug. 14, visitors to the Fort Lowell Museum made their own soap, the old-fashion way.

2. Do a Hohokam pottery craft

The Boot and Sattle Club at the Fort Lowell Museum, 2900 N. Craycroft Road, has different themed activities every Saturday through August 27. This week you'll make a Hohokam pottery craft. You'll also get to play games and hear stories. The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. If you're going to do the craft, it costs $4, but if you're just there for games and stories, it's free.

Cat Strong, senior children’s librarian at Nanini Library, says story time events employ a variety of activities geared toward laying the foundation for children to be future readers.

3. Listen to stories

The whole family can go read stories, listen to music, learn about good books and do crafts together at Family Storytime. It takes place at Woods Memorial Public Library, which is located at 3455 N. First Ave., at 11 a.m. Saturday and it's free.
