You may know the story of Rapunzel, but you you've never seen it like this before.

Sure, the story line of the kidnapped princess stuck to live her days up high in a tower is the same, but in this re-imagined version you won't hear your typical fairy tale music.

Instead, the entire play is set to hip-hop.

The play, which opens Sunday, Jan. 14 at Live Theatre Workshop, was written and directed by Richard Gremel, art director of Empire High School's theater arts program.ย

Writing this play was a dream-come-true for Gremel.

"This production is the culmination of a long-time dream to write a show that tells the classic story of Rapunzel through the music and rhythm of rap," Gremel said. "It will be a new experience for our family theater audience because for the first time, most of the show is made up of song and dance, featuring nine original songs all written in the genre of 1980s-90s old school hip-hop. It has been a lot of fun to create and a great experience for me and the cast."
