Head's up: The Just Between Friends annual back-to-school consignment sale is happening July 28-30, which means now's the time to purge your house of unwanted baby, children's and maternity clothing, shoes, furniture, toys and games to make some extra cash at the event.

What is the JBF consignment sale?

Shoppers search for bargains around the clothing area during the Just Between Friends Back to School consignment sale at the Tucson Convention Center Ballroom in 2014.

JBF holds two huge consignment sales of kids' items at the Tucson Convention Center each year. The event gives families the chance to make money selling unwanted items and to save money purchasing used items.

It's not like walking into a flea market, with unorganized piles of stuff to go through. Everything is organized by size, gender and item, just like you'd see at a department store. And, everything is clean, free of tears and stains and not on a recall list.

If you do decide to sell your stuff, it's super easy.

All you do is sign up here (it's free), tag and price your items using an online barcode system and drop them off on the designated day. JBF handles the sales. You'll get your check about two weeks after the sale ends.

You don't even have to pick up unsold items. Instead, you can opt to have them donated to More Than a Bed, a foster and adoptive resource center.

Sellers make 65 percent of their sales, but can volunteer to help out at the event to make 70 percent. The average seller makes about $400, said Shawna Wilfert, owner of the Tucson franchise.

Wilfert shared the following tips for a successful sale:

  1. Gather supplies: white cardstock, safety pins, hangers, packing tape, resealable baggies, zip-ties and or string.
  2. Tag the big ticket items first, like strollers, high chairs, exersaucers and outdoor equipment. These items sell fast.
  3. JBF suggests you price items at about a third of retail price. Depending on condition, you can price a little higher or lower.
  4. Double check that clothes and shoes are in good condition, without stains, holes or scuff marks.
  5. Position your hangers like question marks when looking at the front of the garment and pin the price tag on the right side.
  6. Seal baggies shut with packing tape.
  7. Presort clothes by size and gender for your drop off convenience.
  8. Schedule a drop off appointment if you have more than 300 items by emailing shawna@jbfsale.com.
  9. Tell your friends. The more you tell, the more you sell.
